The Corporate Exit: Lisa Kinser’s BECOME A BOOKKEEPER Success Story

Hello, friends! Today, I have the beautiful Lisa with me. Lisa is a former Become a Bookkeeper student, and she’s here to share a bite-sized look at her experience in the program.

Become a Bookkeeper: Lisa’s Story

Katie: So Lisa, can you tell us a little bit about how you found BABs and what happened since?

Lisa: So, I was a senior staff accountant in a payroll office for several years at a local university before becoming part of the great resignation of 2021.

Since quitting my job, I have become a certified badass. I've realized stuff about myself that I never realized before working in corporate, and a lot of that is thanks to finding your podcast and going through Become a Bookkeeper!

Finding you and your program led me to find confidence in myself that I didn't know was there because there was always a block. But now, that’s all changed.

My life has absolutely shifted in a positive direction since leaving my corporate job.

The biggest takeaway I have from leaving corporate is that I have good instincts. And when I act on them, big things happen quickly. I never felt that working in corporate. But making the leap to leave and the experience of starting my own business gave me that opportunity.

When I enrolled in Become a Bookkeeper, I went all-in. You have a little worksheet that says it’s a six-week or twelve-week track, and I marked off the dates when I would finish every module…and I finished it all in a week.

Katie: You going through it in a week was hilarious to me. At that point, I still got notifications when people took the assessment, so I was watching how quickly you were going through it and just cracking up.

Lisa: Oh, fantastic. I didn't know that, but that’s hilarious.

Anyway, even though I already had accounting experience, I literally went through the whole thing, even the textbook portion.

I printed it out and carried it with me as I went through the program, and if I was listening to it and you said, “Read this chapter,” I read that chapter. I’m not kidding—I carried it around with me all day! I would just walk around with my three-year-old and read what I could. And if I didn't feel like I understood it, I read it again. I really wanted to absorb as much as possible.

It was so full of value, even for someone like me who had an accounting degree, because it rounded out my knowledge about the specific nuances of bookkeeping and actually showed me the gaps in my education that I needed to fill before starting my own business.

In fact, I’m actually thinking about going through BABs again, just as a refresher. I did go through it pretty fast, after all!
